Doctor Who Book Layout

I developed this full-wrap book cover layout for my GRA-340 course at Southern New Hampshire University. The assignment focused on the intersection of typography and narrative, requiring a design that communicates complex themes through visual storytelling.

Design Strategy

The design for GRA-340 Book Cover Layout Project.jpg centers on a fan-fiction reimagining of the Twelfth Doctor era, shifting the character into a somber, Victorian Gothic mystery. The visual direction was chosen to reflect a "folk-horror" influence and a deep deconstruction of the protagonist's identity.

  • Atmospheric Imagery: I utilized a high-contrast, moody palette of deep blues and blacks, featuring a silhouetted figure shrouded in smoke. This creates a sense of "cosmic scale" and melancholic isolation, echoing the Twelfth Doctor's internal psychological journey.
  • Typographic Hierarchy: The title uses a bold, distressed sans-serif font that appears fractured, symbolizing the fragmented memories of the main character. This is balanced by a clean serif font for the subtitle and blurb to ensure readability against the textured background.
  • Structural Layout: The project includes a complete mechanical layout featuring the front cover, spine, and back cover with promotional "critic" quotes and a barcode, mimicking a professional publishing standard.
  • Personal Branding: The author bio and "The Pelican Press" imprint were integrated to provide a realistic commercial context to the speculative storytelling project.

Technical Skills Applied

  • Narrative Illustration: Using digital manipulation to create an evocative "What If?" atmosphere.
  • Print Production Ready: Formatting a full-wrap jacket with appropriate margins, spine width, and bleed areas.
  • Thematic Consistency: Aligning visual elements with the psychological noir and folk-horror tropes of the 19th-century London setting.

Reflective Outcome

This entry demonstrates my ability to take a personal passion (British science-fiction) and translate it into a professional graphic design framework. By balancing narrative irony with a minimalist yet detailed aesthetic, the final layout effectively captures the "haunting reinterpretation" intended for the project.
